Jamie Shafer (jamieos)  > Ogle Northumberland Reunion July 2005 > Wallsend - the Roman name was Segedunum
On the day the Ogle reunion started , we spent the morning at Wallsend, a short subway ride from center city, the beginning of Hadrian's Wall, located on the river Tyne, next to the Swann-Hunter shipyards. The remains of the Roman fort are mainly in the ground, but a bath house has been reconstructed as well as a short bit of wall of the fort.

Jamie Shafer (jamieos) > Map showing all of Hadrian's Wall - Wallsend is at the far right, and South Shields, which is not connected by any wall, is a fort on the south of the Tyne river
Jamie Shafer (jamieos) > Bird's eye view of the Roman fort of Segedunum (Wallsend)as it would have looked at the height of the Roman occupation. The Swann-Hunter shipyards today occupy the area between the fort and the Tyne River.
Jamie Shafer (jamieos) > Viewing tower of the museum, allowing a broad view of the remains in the ground, as well as the reconstructed bath house and part of the Swann-Hunter yards.
Jamie Shafer (jamieos) > This and the next photo are of the reconstructed wall of the fort - presumably any fort along Hadrian's Wall (except for the parts built of turf). The actual wall would have been the strip between the viewer and the new-built wall.

Jamie Shafer (jamieos) > A picture scanned from the guide of the reconstructed bath house. It was located beyond the camp to take advantage of the downhill drainage from the baths and latrines. The bronze head is that of Emperor Hadrian (Adriano).
Jamie Shafer (jamieos) > The bathhouse- more enclosed than it would have been in Rome, thanks to the British winter weather. And it was heated too - by hypocaust under the floors.
