Jamie Shafer (jamieos)  > Ogle Northumberland Reunion July 2005 > Wallsend - the Roman name was Segedunum
On the day the Ogle reunion started , we spent the morning at Wallsend, a short subway ride from center city, the beginning of Hadrian's Wall, located on the river Tyne, next to the Swann-Hunter shipyards. The remains of the Roman fort are mainly in the ground, but a bath house has been reconstructed as well as a short bit of wall of the fort.

Jamie Shafer (jamieos) > A gatehouse reconstructed at South Shields (Roman name - Arbeia), which would be much like any of the gatehouses constructed along the wall.
Jamie Shafer (jamieos) > A courtyard house reconstructed at South Shields, which probably would have been built for the commander and his family. Again, this would have been much more enclosed than a similar structure in or near Rome. Note the painted stucco exterior - Romans preferred this to naked stone. A visit to South Shields would definitely be in order during another visit.
Jamie Shafer (jamieos) > This monument was erected at Wallsend commemorating the builders of the wall - whenever a name is discovered via archeology it is included. What a great idea - as these "Romans", actually people from all over the Roman Empire, are no doubt the ancestors of many Northumbrians.
Jamie Shafer (jamieos) > Scene from Trajan's Column in Rome showing Roman soldiers building a wall - this is a remarkable how-to lesson in wall building as well as a display of authentic Roman military wear.
