We spent our last afternoon in Newcastle viewing and photographing the sights and learned that Newcastle is not only a historic city but a beautiful one, and very clean and well maintained.

Jamie Shafer (jamieos) > The gatehouse for the Castle just beyond the fanciful building was called the Black Gate, built in the 13th century. The top 2 floors date from the 17th century.

Jamie Shafer (jamieos) > The Castle keep rebuilt in stone in the late 12th and early 13th centuries, just behind and very close to the railroad viaduct. The original castle, built by William the Conquerer's son, Robert Curthose, in 1080 was timber-built on a motte with an attached bailey, a timber palisade.
