The Secret Garden in 1993 & Favorite Flower Photos
The secret garden is on the site of the old vegetable garden, and it was inspired specifically by the newish rose and perennial garden at Crathes Castle near Aberdeen in Scotland. It was built in 1992 by a friend and skilled carpenter who has since passed on. It is in fact considered a memorial to him. The blossoms pictured here exist within the garden, but also in the two long borders leading to the summerhouse and the secret garden, most particularly the peonies which were planted many years ago, and whose names are long-forgotten. Some of the early spring photos of the garden were taken by the builder, especially that taken from atop the "blueberry house"
overlooking all the arbor and roof angles.

A single Monarda (or Bee Balm) blossom, a member of the mint family, with highly scented leaves that give off a delightful scent when brushed against. The perennial plant spreads by underground or even above ground roots (stems?) but is easy to root out if it's spread too much. A similar red Monarda grows wild and at one time was called Oswego Tea and was used as a tea substitute.
